You can no longer drive down the crookedest st., Lombard St.
What you should visit is Golden Gate Park -- esp. the new De Young Museum which has an elevator to the top and a glassed in space where you can walk around and get a 360 degree view of the whole Bay Area. Fabulous on a clear day. Also in GG Park is the wonderful new CA Academy of Science across the promenade from De Young.
Some of the places that others mentioned are mere tourist traps, though Chinatown is an interesting walk. Cable cars are fun if you can get on!
You must drive down the crookedest street in the world, Lombard Street. Also, visit Chinatown. I took a fortune cookie factory tour and checked out the many shops there. They have some great dim sum, as well. Golden Gate Park has some museums, as well as the Japanese Tea Gardens, which are lovely. Muir Woods, just north of San Francisco, is a very scenic, peaceful place. Take a cable car ride to get around town the fun way. Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge. Visit Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, The Embarcadero, and The San Francisco Zoo if you have time.
Go see Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, China Town, go on the cable cars, downtown San Fran is good. Pier 39
Alcatraz, fisherman's wharf/pier 39. nob hill. china town. japan town. union square, ghirardelli square...the Bank of America building. de Young Museum. San Francisco Academy of Sciences Museum. Legion of Honor. Northbeach. the Presidio, the Marina, the Japanese Tea Gardens are beautiful!
the exploratorium is AWESOME, but i suppose there are other science museums around the country....but the exploratorium, in my humble opinion, upstages them all.
