In God We Trust has appeared sporadically on U.S. coins since 1864 and on paper currency since 1957. It was added to your banknotes after the "Red Scare" in the 1950s, when many (otherwise perfectly sane & rational) Americans were conned by the Republican Party into believing there were communists hiding in their closets, under their beds, and behind the bushes in their yards, just waiting to pounce on them and take their beliefs away by force...
