Ask him for advice. Tell him you notice he is particularly good at ... and ask him how he trains for it.

He will love that as it will mean he knows you have been watching him and the fact that you are asking him for advice means he is better at some aspect of the game than anyone else on the team.

Male pride is that simple. If you compliment him on being better than the other guys on the team about one thing then he will feel great and will be flattered. it could be how he crosses the ball, gets it on target or best of all how he gets so much power in his kicks.

You won't feel so shy as you have something clear to talk about and as he is describing it to you, the two of you will be chatting and getting to know each other.
