Elizabethan literature, as opposed to literature of the Middle Ages, was more freewheeling, questioning, and various. Instead of taking for granted a hierarchical world where everything had its place in the divine order, Renaissance literature questioned that order. It gained thereby much energy and freshness, so that it is tonally more various, thematically deeper seeking, linguistically richer (because influenced by a variety of cultures), and formally more experimental. The word was to be explored to fits own sake, not for the glory of God.
This time period is called the Elizabethan Era because of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I during this time period. Some of the world's greatest literary pieces were written during the Elizabethan Era. Many successful playwrights flourished during this time period. Shakespeare, Marlowe, and Beaumont are just a few of the brilliant literary figures from the Elizabethan Era.
