The info that getting a cat is the most effective way to decrease a mouse population is false. The most effective way to decrease a mouse population is to remove the food source they're using. That's why they're there. They can easily get food.

If you get a cat:

1. If the lease prohibits pets and you get a pet you are violating the lease and can be evicted. Evictions go on your record (background check) permanently.

2. If you'd get a cat regardless of 1...what are you gioing to do with the bodies? Domestic cats don't usually hunt for the purpose of feeding themselves, they're already fed by their owner, so they only usually hunt because it's instinctive behavior (for the thrill). The cat(s) will bring the bodies to you and show it off, or leave them lay wherever they captured and killed it. The smelll of rotting dead things isn't a pleasent smell.

And that smell is bound to happen if you get any kind of predatory animal as a pet to hunt them down. The pet might kill and kill and kill, and will only injure some that will get away and hide somewhere to die...then you have a horrible smell when they start to rot.

Not a good idea in my opinion.

Get rid of whatever the food source for them is.

You'll risk eviction and that is by no means convenient.

I've seen people's stuff piled out on the side of a road with a sheriff's notice on it that it cannot be touched by anyone other than the owner... who just had their stuff removed from their place and the locks changed.

That probably doesn't happen very quickly... but yeah.

I seen a yorky (dog), chase mice. I have never seen a cat chase a mouse, but I have seen a dog do it. Maybe yorkies chase rats too. I know I have seen a rat, but I never seen my relative's yorky chase it.

Anyway regarding your landlord not allowing pets. If your lease doesn't say anything about not allowing pets then you can have one even if your landlord doesn't allow pets. What you should do is before signing a lease make sure your landlord can't screw you over. Because if you were to get a pet, and your landlord verbally said no then your landlord might try to kick you out if you were to get a pet, but if you really wanted to stay then you could if your lease was properly made, and I don't think the landlord can do much about it, or maybe nothing at all.

My former landlord made all kinds of BS just like yours. Him verbally saying I don't allow pets is not enforceable if it's not written on the lease.

Cat equals probable eviction.  Make sure your landlord is responsible for pest control.  Google "landlord tenant laws" and your state's name for details.  If the landlord is responsible make sure your request is in writing and if nothing is done within a reasonable time you'll have to sue your landlord for a breach of the lease.

You could buy a caulk gun and fix the mouse problem yourself! If you get a cat you will be evicted, excuses or not.
