At the Quickie Cookie Company, the cookie ovens are used from 8am to 6pm and produce 3000 cookies per hour. The packages by machine can package 4000 cookies per hour and also stops exactly at 6pm. At what time should the packaging machine be turned on so that all cookies are packaged and the machine never waits for cookies?

Note: 8am to 6pm is 10 hours
x = number of hours needed to produce sufficient packages = number of hours PRIOR to 6pm that packaging must begin
10(3000) = 4000x
30000 = 4000x
30000/4000 = x
7.5 hours = x
You must turn the packaging machine on 7.5 hours prior to 6pm, or at 10:30 am.
c'mon. calculate total production of cookies by the ovens in the allotted time and then divide that figure by the run rate [cookies per hour] of the packaging machines.
note that this assumes that there is sufficient storage for baked by not yet packaged cookies, which is almost certainly NOT the case is real life production situations.
Ovens make 30,000 cookies in the 10 hour day. That's 7.5 hours of packaging, so turn it on at 10:30.
Mmmm cookies
