Plot hole in the movie Mystic River…maybe?

So remember in the movie Mystic River how the tape of the 911 call is what busts the case open for the police. They re-listening to the tape and notice that the caller refers to a “her” when reporting the abandoned car with blood on it and realize that the caller has have knowledge of the murder since there is no other way they could know it was a “her” who was the victim. So here is my problem with this – why on Earth would the killers have made that call in the first place? They knew the girl was actually dead since they had murdered her so why call the police and report the bloodied car at all? What did they hope to gain by making that call? They had to know it would only give the police a head start in finding the car and starting their investigation and in actuality, due to the “her” slip up when talking with the 911 operator, it even ended up getting them caught.

Am I missing something or is there any motivation at all for the real killers to even start that 911 call?

Update:

Ok, granted the kids aren’t that smart but even dumb people have to have some motivation for the actions they take, even if it is misguided. My question is what did they hope to gain by even starting that call? Not only was there nothing to gain, but there isn’t even the appearance of something to gain and thus it is an action no person would take, even a dumb person. If that is the case, and I am not overlooking something, then it would seem that their motivation was a solely a contrivance of the writer to advance the plot, and thus it is a plot hole.
