do you think that the pageant promotes racism and degrades women? Where do you see connections with power, and how is power articulated by those who demonstrated in August of 1968? What influences did this demonstration have on your everyday life?

I don't think it promotes racism but it upholds a single (European) standard for all women as though there is only one kind of beauty. Black contestants look like black versions of white contestants, not like what they are -- girls of african descent. Asian contestants also look like a variation on the theme of a European. I would faint if I ever saw a beautiful black woman in the "pageant" who looked african-african, or an asian woman who actually looked asian.
