Hi, I went down to my local pet store today and saw that they were selling young Gerbils for just £2.50 each. Should I get a couple, or find a different pet?
Update:Oh yea, I've been looking in to pets for quite a while now, so don't worry, I know all I need to know about the little guys, and I've got a 15 gallon tank aquarium in my garage to put them in, plus I know what they need in their home (e.g bedding, chewable wood, hiding places ect.) I've researched on many other pets too, but I can never decide which to get. I though of this sudden price drop as 'a sign' to get Gerbils. I'm simply asking whether or not you guys would recommend them.

Gerbils are great pets. As long as you have researched them, then go for it! ;)
They are social so they like to live in pairs. They are more active than hamsters. I typed up some info on gerbils a while ago, so here it is, so if you want gerbils you can have pretty much all I know about them!! My gerbils love their CritterTrail cage, with tube extensions! They're great at climbing and jumping, so they can jump into the tubes easily. I get Freshworld bedding for my gerbils, and Fori-Diet hamster/gerbil food. Here's a little bit of info. You do need to take out your gerbils at least 1 time a day to get them used to your scent, and play with them. You need to be gentle. Be careful because a gerbil is REALLY fast. You shouldn't EVER pick a gerbil up by its tail--it hurts them! Along with the bedding in the cage, you should add some shredded up toilet paper or paper towels, so they can make a nest to sleep in. When you're holding a gerbil, you do want to be careful not to let them chew on your shirt, because their teeth are sharp and can easily--and quickly-- chew a hole in your shirt. It's happened to me before. If your gerbil nips at you, don't hit it or yell. That just might scare it more. Keep the cage in a place where there won't be too many drafts or direct sunlight. As far as toys go, I would suggest DEFINITELY saving every last toilet paper and paper towel roll you can find. My gerbils totally kill tubes. Also, I have some wooden chew toys for my gerbils. Make sure they have a wheel to run on, so they can get exercise when they aren't running in a ball or getting other exercise. You should probably get some run-around balls for them to exercise and play in. However, your gerbils may not love running around in them. Mine don't really get it yet, but still, every gerbil is different! As far as cages go, I'd probably go with a CritterTrail cage. They can have fun little tube extensions. I have a CritterTrail cage and a Lazy Lookout extension, which my gerbils love to sleep in. My gerbils love sunflower seeds, so I give them the seeds for a treat. As for food and water, I scatter the food around the cage so my gerbils can find it, which might make it a little more interesting for them. A food dish would also work, but my gerbils just kicked bedding all over it. I usually fill up the water bottle around every 3 or 4 days. You should clean the cage every 1-2 weeks, which is when I do it. When holding your gerbil, be careful not to let it jump out of your hands because they are so fast. Once in a while, I "gerbil proof" my room and let my gerbils run around the floor, but be CAREFUL when doing this. A gerbil can squeeze itself into small spaces, and easily get lost. If you want your gerbils to be comfortable around you, and really really friendly, you need to get them used to you. You might want to try feeding them some treats from the palm of your hand, so they can smell you. My gerbils crawl all over me now, because they got used to me after a little bit. If after a little while, they're still kind of timid, don't be discouraged! They may still need some time to get used to you.
Ta da!! Ha ha, that pretty much sums everything I know up! (: Good luck!! Hope I helped (:
Gerbils make great pets! I just got one a few weeks ago and I already got mine hand trained and is happy and heathy. The only thing I would worry about is the price. That is really low for the price of a gerbil so make sure the gerbils you pick are heathy and don't have an illness and any broken bones.
Good luck and I hope I helped
Research their care and make sure they are a pet that suites your lifestyle. That will help you decide. There's a lot more to consider when buying a pet than just the cost.
