It appeared randomly a couple weeks ago, it was just pink then. Now it looks like this. Turning black and maybe scabbing?? I’m worried :( He’s 5, not sure if that’s relevant.
When any lumps or bumps change color or start growing faster, it is time for a Vet to check it out. there are so many many many skin problems in dogs, it takes a Vet to diagnosis it. Even if you provided a picture, there are no Vets on this site.

Call the vet. Although our dog had things in her ear such as a haematoma, we never had anything that looked like this. Could there be ticks involved?

There are no vets on yahoo (this growth is NOT normal) but anything turning black maybe tissue becoming NECROTIC. SEE your vet!
As is always the case with new lumps/masses, it should be checked by your vet.
Cancer, have the vet check it.
