O I am not kidding.Both are used with different meanings.It seems to me that la mañana is used for the nearest future and el mañana only for a far away future event.Why I don't know.I use Spanish every day.

La manana is a noun which generally represents the present. El manana is future.

Remember this: "Mañana a la mañana" means "Tomorrow at the morning"
