No, it isn't the only way to be open-minded, but it's the only rational way to be open-minded. There are irrational forms of open-mindedness, such as gullibility. You should be open to new ideas only insofar as they are supported by reason and evidence.
A "willingness to change your mind" is not a thing. No one "wills" their mind to change. Changing your mind is a compulsion that happens when you perceive a new idea to make more sense in terms of your other beliefs than the idea you previously held.
The main point is one should not over-think. Even if one is allowed to think deep, one should not get mentally confused. It is because if we close our mind in a confused mental condition, we can not express our willingness to change our mind.
I find rational thinking limiting, but irrational thinking - if it predominates is even more restrictive.
I take the Goldielocks approach. I try different sorts of thinking on but I don’t commit to any one style. Life is absurd. A straight jacket will not enhance or tame that absurdity.
Being open minded or being ambiguous is a trait not many carry. I will happily change my mind on theism if I was given what I needed to be convinced, I, even though the thought of a god is absolutely ridiculous, would be willing to accept a possibility of some form of deism.
I can also argue both sides on why they both make sense (not the xstian it sense of religion) - that I have convinced myself is crazy the way they see it.
Rationality is part of it. The real key is not to get your life, your worth, your identity, from being "right" about something. That is a true open mind.

Yes..... it is emotions that affect rationality and mind affected by emotions is biased and can not be truly open.
