So you are unable to deal with historical truths? That's one source where ignorance comes from. Do you REALLY think you are the ONLY White male in America that thinks slavery was disgusting? REALLY?
Keep in mind, people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, gave up their slaves. A whole war was fought over the issue in the 1860's. And before you simply right-off any Southerners as simply "scum bags" as you seem to want to, keep in mind America was talking about asking them to give up a whole way of life that had become dependent on slavery, a long time World-wide institution of the time. So why don't you put a little time-sensitive context in your "outrage".
How about you first research the percentage of whites who actually owned slaves.... while you are at it may as well research the percentage of blacks who owned slaves.... hell, go all out and research the percentage of blacks who captured and sold them.... still do for that matter.
Depends on the why doesn't it? Do you want to bury your head in the sand like the actions of your ancestors have anything to do with the now? Does it; really that your dad was part of the KKK or other mob mentality?
One's past is the past, but the thing with the media. Their going to twist "what facts are out there" to make them say what they think is really important; savvy?

It's not like they profit from it , by you knowing the family history..........learn from it, and move on.
An idea:
You can't change the past. Why not devote yourself to uncovering the current slavery (AKA human trafficking) issue that is rampant in the USA?

Not all slave owners were monsters. FACT IS... if you fear the past and refuse to acknowledge it - you run the risk of repeating it.
Don't stress out about it. You are not responsible for your ancestors.
That makes about as much sense as the argument from Nino Vitale, an Ohio politician who refuses to wear a mask "because it disrespects God".
Yes, and I'm liberal.
If it soothes you, consider this, there will be generations in the future, descendants of you that will think very terrible things of you.
Try not to hold these things against history. If you lived at that time would you be a slave or slave owner, which would you choose?
