Through trying to learn this language (闽南话) I've discovered that there are many sub dialects; therefore there's just too much to learn to be able to communicate effectively with people that speak this dialect. When I talked about the many different accents that this dialect possesed a native speaker said "I can still understand la", but it turns out she didn't understand when I spoke to her. No, it's not because I wasn't pronouncing the words properly, I just used one of the very many sub dialects :( (at least Taiwanese can women understand me :) ). What do you think, is this language worth learning or not and why?

I would say it is not worth learning completely. It would be worth learning a few sentences just for the WOW factor and to impress the ladies. Minnan Hua is only used in some places in Taiwan Province and Fujian Province, and there are variations from town to town county to county. I would recommend learning Manadarin, as most speakers of Minnan hua also speak Mandarin and now even in Hong Kong and Taiwan every is learning the importance of Manadarin and starting to make it required learning.
