It just seems like men rarely if ever get asked about their weight, yet women often get those kinds of remarks. For example, a casual acquaintance remarks, "Wow, you look so great, have you lost weight?!"
What do you think is the motivation behind comments like this, especially if it's said in front of other people, like your significant other and friends?
Thanks in advance. =)

no, it's NOT appropriate and it's totally unnecessary when there are other ways to get your point across. you can stop at the "wow, you look so great." that's a complete sentence in itself and says all you need to say. talking about weight is a sore subject so it's better to leave it alone unless SHE wants to bring it up.
the motivation behind bringing up the weight comes from ignorance on one end of the scale to passive aggressiveness nastiness on the other end. if someone had surgery on their face, you wouldn't say "wow, you look so great, did you get a nose job?" the right thing to do would be the same as above... "wow, you look so great."
every single thing is not someone else's business to announce. show a little decorum and just give a straightforward compliment. a "backhanded compliment" is not a compliment at all... it's a catty putdown disguised as a compliment. if you really actually like the person, then give them a true compliment and stop at that.
I agree with Bluebell very much, right on cue. You are never to mention a lady's weight, saying she's looks great is good enough. When you ask have you lost weight implies she was fat, that's a big no,no.
Sure, it's appropriate - after you've been married to him for 20 years or more!
Women are much less confident in their appearance than men. Telling girls who have lost weight that you noticed builds up their confidence. Makes them feel that all their eating healthy and hard work in the gym is paying off and others are noticing.
Yes
-Maybe when it's a "long Distance Relationship..." ;) Otherwise, it's a subject thats BEST steered Clear of... ( if You Value your Life ). ;)

I would say yes but do it in away that will make her feel better about herself.
