We are a Capitalist/Socialist based economy. We always have been. Despite what Fox News leads you to believe, it's no where near being Communism.
The U.S. military; Highways and Roadways; Bridges and Tunnels; Mass or Public Transportation; Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security, Police and Firefighters, Public Schools and Colleges, the VA medical system; Public Library's, National Parks, the US Post Office, Town Garbage Collections and much more are ALL Socialist. You can even go so far as to call many of the Founding Fathers Socialists because they believed in many of these things for this country. Are you scared yet?
Communism is stateless (i.e. no government) and in communism, the workers own production. So, in an imperialistic/colonialist state where a small number of capitalists control production, I'd say no.
The simple truth is that socialism and communism, and their philosophical cousins, all place the interests of the state and groups above those of the individual.
If the interests of the individual are primary then everyone is treated equally. No other political philosophy does that.
America is the most rapacious capitalist nation that the world has ever seen. The super-rich capitalists so dominate every aspect of society that they can convince many people that we need even more right-wing policies or we might as well call ourselves "Communist America."
