Well duh, of all the branches the Marines are the one most likely to send you away from your family. If you want to stick close to the family, join the USAF and get a job as a medical something.

A common Marine Corps saying .... "If the Marine Corps wanted you to have a spouse (or children) it would have issued them to you". The infantry is not conducive to family life. The root word is "infant" because it is for the young and while you are young, you already have a family. That doesn't preclude you from becoming a Marine or an infantryman, but it makes the task extra tough ... especially for your spouse. It takes a very special kind of significant other to accept a military husband. If you truly have it in your heart to become a Marine, then let nothing stop you.

assumption here is that you are either married or have proven to have no custody of the child( visitation is not a problem). otherwise as a single parent you are not eligible to enlist.

you make the time you are together count. but I disagree with the advice about picking a MOS that doesn't deploy.. pick the MOS you will ENJOY for the next 4-6 years. if you are miserable at work, then you will be miserable at home and that's no way to raise a kid. also there is no more homesteading allowed( being at the same base for more than one enlistment period)

things are ten thousand percent better than they were when both my parents were in. no emails, no face time, no instant communication. snail mail was rare coming from a combat zone( my dad was a Greenside HM) I remember one deployment when they were both gone at the same time for over 90 days with exactly zero communication the entire time.

Why don't you try the Air Force. Less family separation.

My SIL enlisted in the Navy when my nephew was 2 and it’s was rough but doable. 2 is a young age and you being gone won’t have any long term effects on your child. He/she won’t remember a time when you weren’t in the military. It’s 8-12 weeks and then you are able to visit, FaceTime, etc. It’ll be hard on you but providing a financially stable life for your family is worth it. Try to pick an MOS that will keep you home more than not, medical, admin, etc. but know that deployments aren’t 100% avoidable. My dad was an Electronic Technician in the Navy and deployed about once every two years but was stationed at the same base for 20 years. My brother was a Navy Corpsman and only deployed once in 5 years.
