I have 2 GSD, and it depends on where they are and what time of day. Out back during the day they will bark if anyone comes to the house, or walks down the street. They stop as soon as they're told it's ok. Inside during the day when someone comes over. my female will sit in the window in front part of my house where she can see and be seen, while my male will get me and take me to the door ( nudges me and runs to the door)and sit to let me know someone is there, and stays there behind the door until he's told it's ok. At night one sleeps under the baby's crib and will come get us if he hears a person outside, one sleeps up against the front door and does the same. If they are outside at night, which is rare, and someone comes on the property they will actually open the back door ( they turn the handle with their mouth) and come in and get us. Neither will leave our side until we say they can. My husband went to school to train dogs for his fathers security company, and has trained them like this bc he doesn't alway want the random people that show up selling crap that he has a big dog right there. He's a bit paranoid, but there are a lot of random breakins out here. big housing building going on due to many new units being moved to the army base we live by and the rising price of copper has made people fond of stealing copper wiring out of AC units, someone tried ours which is in the yard, he's now in jail thanks to the dogs letting us know he was there and cornering him, with my husband waiting until the police got here. Took him close to a yeR to get them trained to do this
number 1 : a. dogs are naturally going to react that way to people they are not very familiar with which is why guard dogs will be more persistent.
number 2 : i guess i'd say 2 because my dog is not a watchdog. she just barks at raccoons and ducks that run through the backyard.
number 3: i have a miniature cockier spaniel. haha not quite guard dog material
Er. None of the above.
All of my dogs, of varying breeds (Jack Russells, Irish Wolfhound mix, GSD, Doberman), shut up as soon as I tell them to. I can say "Shut up", "Quiet" or just tell them something along the lines of "Alright, I see it, you can go away now".
My Doberman is THE BEST guard dog, imo. She won't bark. She'll wait, just looking at the door, until you go over to it, and then she'll follow you, and if you allow her, she'll stand by you when you answer the door. If she's worried, or doesn't know who the person on the other side is, she'll get more alert, and then will skulk off into the dark corner in which her bed lies, as I tell her to "get lost already"...Lol.
One of the GSDs can't be trusted. She nips. Nothing serious, but it's not an appreciated behaviour. She gets sent into the kitchen. The other one barks, then shuts up on command, and is then pretty welcoming, and all the others just sort of look at the door, sometimes grumble/bark, but rarely get up to see who's there. If they know the person, they'll run over all happy-happy, but usually they just wag their tails from their beds.
