…would they have been so eager to give Americans freedom of religion? Maybe they should have amended the first amendment, so it read, "You guys have the freedom to practice existing religions, but you don’t have the freedom to invent wacky new religions that exploit gullible Americans, ok?"

The problem isn't freedom of Religion, its freedom of speech in some cases, maybe they should make a law stating you can have freedom of Religion but don't use it to exploit others
Martin Luther started the wackiness. Blame him...
But again, your ignorance is astounding! And yet you feel so free to call others ignorant.
Perhaps you should step away from the computer and pick up a history book. Clearly you have NO CLUE what they were fleeing from.
Let me help... In England, if you did not swear to the "state religion" (like one had to in Roman times) then you were locked away in London Tower for TREASON!!! Until your execution date. Then you were dragged through town behind a horse to Tyburn Tree. Hanging one person at a time just wasn't good enough as so few people were happy with the government forcing their own personal religion on one. Tyburn Tree was a triple gallows.
You were hung until you lost consciousness. But not dead. Then you were taken down, strapped to a table and disembowled - while still alive and aware. After your death - your head and limbs were cut off and boiled. Then strung up around town to deter others from not accepting the jolly old Church of England.

So many people died fighting for our freedom - so we wouldn't have to experience such a brutal death. And you make jokes. Shame on you.
Please be aware that you would NOT have been allowed to abstain from going to services, as a person without faith. You would either go unwillingly - or die horribly. Your choice.
This is a very good question Desiree, and I''m so glad you brought it up. I'm positive if our founders could see how liberals and atheist would bend and abuse the 1st ammendment, that they would have certainly clarified it with more distinct language.
Bible study and prayer lasting hrs long were a regular part of every session of congress, and this was after the constitution was ratified to include the bill of rights containing the 1st ammendment. Were our members of congress who held these prayer and bible study meetings ignoring the 1st ammendment ? Or did they simply not write the first ammendment to mean what modern atheist and liberals say it does ?
The point was to give people the freedom to choose any religion they want to.
That was the main purpose of the Pilgrims when they came over to America,
now you want to take that privilege away.
People have the right to be gullible. And all religions are for the gullible, because they are all based on faith, not evidence.
That's the definition of a religion...belief with no evidence.
So, our founding fathers made sure that you could be and remain, stupid, duped, and cheated. We were established as a republic, and certain rights.... and one of those leads to being scammed.
There's no cure for stupid. There IS a cure for ignorance. It is called education. But stupid? Alas, no.
And all religions are wacky. That's why they are religions, and not science.
The ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE is ONLY about the GOVERNMENT trying to establish a Religion of THEIR choice as the OFFICIAL religion or whatever......
Guess what.....you are not the "hall monitor" over what other Americans choose to believe in their own lives......regardless of what you might think of it................Where do you "get off" even suggesting such
a thing......If someone CHOOSES to be "gullible" or "exploited", that is THEIR choice. What is it to YOU??? It's NOT your call to make....so why not live your own life...........and don't worry about what they believe or follow????????
that's incorrect. Some of our founding fathers were the friends of religious innovators

"The Gothic idea that we are to look backwards instead of forwards for the improvement of the human mind, and to recur to the annals of our ancestors for what is most perfect in government, in religion and in learning, is worthy of those bigots in religion & government, by whom it has been recommended, & whose purposes it would answer."
-- Thomas Jefferson; from letter to Dr. Joseph Priestly (Jan, 27, 1800)
That is not abuse of the clause, it exemplifies it.
But freedom of expression stops at the beginning of the rights of others.
And please, do you think that the existing religions did/do not exploit gullible people? Ha.
And how exactly has the establish clause been "abused"?
It's often ignored, unfortunately, but what abuse are you talking about?
what religion are you talking about? If you are talking about christianity, it was around long before the constitution
