Just bought one for my 8-year-old son for Xmas from Ebay... £45. He has to build it (should keep him quiet for a few hours) and then it is interactive. Powered by batteries, it dnaces, walks etc. And, if he gets bored, he can take it apart and make a radio controlled car from the same pieces!
Science kits and building toys--Zoobs and Coinstruction are new and very cool, and Erector sets are a classic, and anything magic or spy are great for that age.

Anything to do with Dr Who is big this year. Try the Cyberman helmet (if you can get one) or the remote control Dalek looks very cool.
