A W-2 will not tell anyone the start and end dates of your employment. They will only show that you worked for an employer during that tax year. You simply tell them, "I don't keep my old W-2s. I gave you the names and addresses of those employers. If they cannot verify for you when I worked for them, I have nothing else to give you."

If you were off by a month or so, will probably be ok. If you said you worked there 2 years and were really only there 2 months, you're toast
W2s don't tell employment dates. They list total income for the year.
If you are in California, it is illegal for a potential employer to ask for this (new law 1/1/2018).
