Today I found out I got the part of Eponine, I've only been in two other musicals in my life, and I have never been a lead. Any tips to calm the nerves, etc? Singing tips?
Well it's one of the best roles in the show. Be well prepared. Learn the songs early so you have lots of time to really develop the character and feel what Eponine goes through.
The only cure for stage fright is to get out there and sing your heart out. With time, it will become comfortable for you. For your first time, just remind yourself that you're a very talented singer, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten the part. After that, just have fun and tell yourself that it doesn't matter what other people think of your performance. Also, remind yourself that you're not on Broadway, so it's ok to make a few mistakes, and chances are no one will even notice them. Make sure to have a few close friends supporting you in the audience, and you'll be all set.
I had the same problem for many years. I got sick at every performance. I tried hypnosis and every thing that was suggested to me.
I finally decided that I was going to stop trying all these things and figure out what causes "stage fright" instead of the 100s of ways to eliminate it.
The cause of stage fright is you are thinking about who is listening or watching.
The cure of stage fright is to quit thinking those thoughts.
That did not seem to be an easy thing to do.
How could I eliminate those thoughts?
think about something else. The only practical thing to think about is "How to make this performance the best that I can" You must think only of each word, each note, every gesture.
You start doing this every time you sing or play, in practice or performance.
It worked, and I have taught others including professionals how to end stage fright. Those who took it serious, were able to eliminate stage fright
