I'm trying to get a bit more creative when posting my husbands ads on CraigsList and I tried using the HTML code for a star and it shows it correctly on the preview but when it shows it listed it just shows the HTML formula for it. What happened and how can I get it to work right?

You can't get it to work correctly. They do this to prevent something called XSS (Cross Site Scripting). If they left these things unchecked, then someone could simply type a simple script into a form and whenever someone visited their listing the script would be executed.
There is no way around it. The filter is built into their code and it automatically converts any special characters into their entities so that they can't be executed.
That's probably CraigsList blocking the html code, if it didn't block it, evil HTML/Javascript code could be inserted. This is one of the ways hackers operate (it is called 'XSS injections').
So the answer is no, maybe try to use the alt code, all of them can be found here: http://usefulshortcuts.com/alt-codes
Good luck
