Well since the Cold War started in 1945 after the end of WW2 the 1950's was the early part of the Cold War. But in the 1950's the two nations, the USA and the USSR, both built up their military power which includes their nuclear arsenals which led to a fear of a nuclear holocaust and many people, including my grandfather, built bomb shelters in their back yards just in case. Also during this time communism started to spread across the world, a US spy plane crashed in the USSR, and the USSR crushed a rebellion in Hungary where the US did not intervene.
