I put their poop in the hole they dug and lightly covered it with dirt.
It took less than a week to train all my diggers and not a one ever dug another hole again.
I've raised labs, australian shepherds, german shepherds, american staffordshire terriers, golden retriever, scwt terriers, poodle, schnauzers and more...
Haha...anyone with a 100% foolproof method to stop this habit would earn a fortune!!
My gsd would dig a fresh hole in my lawn every day for the first 9 months of his life ..DESPITE me putting poop in the holes, making him a dirt pit, spraying the grass with dog repellent , putting jeyes fluid in the holes and all sorts of other advised remedies. From 9 months the digging habit started to subside a bit and it was one hole every 3-4 days and then one a week until now he is almost 2 and a half years old he only digs a hole once every few months.
If there are small underground creatures, like moles and weasels in their tunnels the dog can hear them scuttling about and will try and dig down to get at them. Its futile trying to stop the dog.
The only 100% solution to this issue is to fence off the area that you don`t want holes to be dug in!! OR hope your dog grows out this habit!!

Don't leave your dog outside. Dogs need to be inside. Then, your dog won't dig.
