Common sense must prevail. If the patient has no chance of any recovery and can expect only a steadily worsening condition the impact upon survivors must be addressed. Additionally, at some point the patient may no linger wish to be forced to remain alive; this happened with my niece, who faced with her second lung transplant for cystic fibrosis, decided she did not want to go on with it any more and willingly died soon after.
