Hello everyone, (:
Our class just finished reading Wuthering Heights and our teacher gave us a take home essay to do:
The prompt: How does Emily Bronte's manipulation of time help contribute to the work of Wuthering Heights as a whole.
The book is rather confusing (and I'm speaking for a majority of high school student who were forced to read the book.) And I'm struggling here.
Please help. I'm not asking for you a whole essay just a bit more clarification and maybe some examples to help me get started.
I greatly appreciate it. (:

i think it definitely refers to the jumping around and also the amount of detail
I had to read it for freshman year, but then i re-read it at the end of the year and it made so much more sense. You have to read it atleast twice to understand it and feel for the characters instead of just hating them.

I'm not 100% I get what your teacher is asking.
But I guess he/she means how the story jumps around in time.
The story begins with Mr.Lockwood visiting wuthering heights at a point in time where Heathcliff is 37 and Cathy is already dead. The author established a foreshadowing of what was to come (a very dark story) by letting us see this first.
Emily then uses Nelly to tell us about her childhood and what she remembers growing up with Heathcliff and Cathy (about age 7 for Heathcliff at this point.)
Once we establish that Heathcliff and Cathy are close, the father cares for Heathcliff as his son and Hindly is jealous the author then goes to the next key event ( the father's death, 3 years later and what follows.)
and so on.
