Yesterday a very helpful person told me about a Russian site similar to yahoo answers. Unfortunately I am not able to interact on this site yet because I am currently self-learning Russian and therefore stuck on the basic alphabet, and I recognize only a handful of words from translation sites which may or may not be correct. Despite numerous emails, I have been unable to find a chat buddy on here who understands Russian+English to help me, so I have come up with the next best thing...
Videooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!...
Just one problem, dvd's are sold by region and popularity. Therefore when I go to the store I find an endless supply of movies with captioning & audio in Spanish, French, German (yes german), Portuguese, Japanese, and one even had Thai! (Are we at war with Russia & Italy or something?) When browsing most online dvd's, they do not give caption information. Does anyone know any movies that have both audio and captioning in Russian and English so I can order them, as this would be the PERFECT way to learn to write and speak it correctly!
PLEASE, help a girl who's desperately seeking culture.
Don't let let me die knowing only of hot dogs and denim!

Here you go.
First. Sign up with livemocha.com, and you will instantly be flooded with people wanting to exchange with you. Lots of Russian. There is a set of flashcards in there with the alphabet. once you study it a couple of times, you will catch on pretty quickly.
Also, here:

Another place I found, with the alphabet and sounds.
Try downloading stuff from torrents for the movies. And many English language dvds can be switched into other languages, Russian, included (heck some of them have languages that are only spoken by about ten people on the whole planet!) Try to find the ones that were the more expensive in the first place. Maybe the clerk can help you. Maybe netflix...just search Russian language movies. Or any other online store.
And, Sorry to inform you, but they have figured out denim in the rest of the world, and I don't really know this, but I'd be willing to bet, they have hot dogs in Russia, now, too.
In the Soviet Union, these films were not. And even if they were, they do not correspond to the cultural needs of spectators. A contemporary films from the only thing that came to mind is "Brother 2" There was still a little-known genre, as a Soviet thriller. Most often, the plot is fictional local conflict. The Americans were represented there as worthy opponents. A such brave guys who wonder why they were sent here and are afraid of their careless actions unleash a nuclear conflict, and their leader (General, Admiral) a wise man who secretly sympathy Russian, but faithful to the oath, so adamant in their decisions.
Some videos store will have an international section. Just call around. They may be hard to find and the selections minimal.
