I would say oneself... It is undoubtedly a singular subject: Each person would live by oneself.
Though I'm not completely sure... I also looked around and in most places both things appear: Each person would live by himself or herself bla bla bla.
But yeah, I think the other person up there is right, maybe you should rephrase it.

Himself or herself is grammatically correct. If in doubt, "himself" would cover either.
However, some people are beginning to say "themself". We see it more and more in official documents.

I think it would be: Each person would live by himself
Because this is a tricky one, I would get round the difficulty by saying: 'Everyone would live alone'. Bom dia!
