Eat well and if it's something that is going to take a few hours, it is suggested you take a sugary drink. Whether or not the tattooist will allow you to drink during the tattoo is up to them, but you may need it afterwards.
A lot of stress can be put on the body during a tattoo and can react like it is in shock and cause blood sugar to drop. So well rested, well fed and a sugary drink if you're likely to need the boost.
Don't take any pills/painkillers. They can affect healing rate (and many painkillers are blood thinners which should be avoided). Some tattooists will not tattoo you if they know you have taken any type of medication before hand.
