From a criminal researcher's prospective, why are scientists’ claims to be objective controversial?
I am trying answer, some questions, in my criminal justice class and I need some help. Any thoughts or ideas, of how to answer this question, would be very helpful and appreciated, greatly.
Claims of objectivity are easier made than substantiated. If we are all products of our environment, our difference in environments in being raised, nurtured and educated will affect our perspective in judging ourselves "objective".
Do you recall the old statement that all our children are "above average". Objectively this is obviously untrue but subjectively this is what we all say.
I recall most recently and unfortunately a Psychologist testifying for the Prosecutor stating he does not meet the clients he evaluates for Criminal Court and law enforcement evaluation at his plush Beverly Hills, CA. private office because, "They are all guilty". Yet, this same man earlier testified that he was providing independent medical evidence! Does that sound objective to you.
We all carry prejudices, biases and superstitions that carry unflattering consequences upon our beliefs and analysis. Scientists are no more or less affected than any other group. They are no more objective than any other group. Giving scientific opinions credence or belief beyond any other groups or professions is manifestly unfair, unjust and historically inaccurate.
Example- Physics Nobel Prize winner Shockly opinion of genetic superiority of white people
