Please help, thanks!
(a^−1 + a^−9)^−1 =
1/( 1/a + 1/a^9 )
Multiply top and bottom by a^9 and you get
a^9 / (a^8 + 1 )
this won't factor unless you are allowing factorization over the reals, with irrational coefficients.
If you want to eliminate improper fractions, you can write it as
a - a/(a^8 + 1)
= (a^9)/(a^9 + 1)
