Weber said that the protestant ethic was responsible for capitalism. In his view, catholicism favored leisure, not work, and protestantism also meant an end to the ban on usury, so banks could thrive and lend out money for the growth of business. Critics have claimed that catholic countries like Italy didn't progress as much as protestant england and germany because they didn't have as much resources like coal; catholicism itself wasn't at fault.
