Although people who feel superior may deliberately elevate their language to make others feel inferior when and if they don't understand all the words. It's more than just language use, though. It's their whole attitude. (Which often masks a feeling in inferiority. We're so complex.)
I prefer to rise to the challenge and learn their hoity-toity words and a few of my own.
If I was at a post-production cocktail party I am sure that there would be someone going on about the play's mise-en-scène. The regular folks would be commenting on the wonderful stage sets and lighting.
