In a way.. this phrase helps you to let go and move on.. Just like they say with love: if you set them free and they come back.. you know it's meant to be.
But we ourselves are the ones who have to make our goals happen, our dreams.. others, things that are not in our control, I think the phrase applies on those things.. you can't change some things and you'll just have to accept it.. and hope for the best. For all the other things, I believe we have a say in it.. I believe we can create our own opportunities..
EVERY TIME I hear that phrase, it's someone saying "Well if i was meant to go to college, i would have gone". What? You think the application writes itself and mails itself in? You think the scholarships magically appear at the school, with your name stamped on them?
Or, "Yeah I really want to work at NASA. Let's see if that happens!"
The @#%@% did he mean, "let's see?"
Does NASA drive through Home Depot, slapping stock boys in the face with job offers?
EVERY person I've met who uses that phrase makes like $9 an hour, or slightly more money mowing lawns.
Keeping a positive outlook on life is one thing, but people do realize that you actually have to... you know... APPLY and WORK to get things, right?
I find the idea that things are or are not "meant to be" insulting. We may not be able to control every factor, but we are ultimately the makers of our own lives. We act within the circumstances that exist, and that's what determines the outcome -- not some vague notion of "destiny" or "fate."
Sometimes it's easy, and sometimes it's not -- and sometimes the outcome is good; other times it's not. But those things are only determined *for*" us to the extent that we allow them to be.
As for me, I know that I've had some luck in my life, but the effect of it is still the result of what I have done in response -- bad moments at which I could've done better, and good ones that I took advantage of.
I am the author of my life. I'm not just along for the ride.
Nothing is meant...things happen due to exposure of various events and or elements. The results are usually the same under the same circumstances. It's not fate, or destiny...it's reactions to actions or the lack of, if you trip over a log it's not meant to be, it's carelessness and lack of planning. If a dead tree falls on your house is a lack of action toward the tree...obviously dead. I'm sure there are things beyond our control, but they are still confined to the laws of physics, probabilities, and perhaps even chance. But the sun doesn't shine on the same dogs behind everyday....What? Never mind...Stop touching me!

No. The universe is endless in possibilities, with the questionable possibilities to other parallel universes.
If it was meant to be, it could be in a parallel but distinct universe,
But considering our plane, the universe we're living in, It It's meant to be, we'all have to be the ones to make it.
No. We have more control of our lives than that.
Our decisions dictate--for the most part-what will be.

It is a vague answer, what ever is going to happen will happen. It is your decisions and actions that are going to make whatever happen!
