I’m a first time dog owner. She’s an 8 month old Labrador/border collie. We live in Texas and it’s starting to get chillier. Do dogs need sweaters when it gets cold and if so at what temperature do they need to wear them?
A dog would only need a jumper or coat if they're in a very cold environment, especially if they are in an environment which doesn't typically fit their breed. For example, a Chinese crested, a Doberman or a Mexican hairless dog would benefit from it during the winter time when it's icy or snowy, or if they lived in an environment where it was cold a lot. Dog breeds which come from colder climates - for example a Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute - wouldn't really need them so much since they're more adapted to the cold.
A Labrador or Border collie possibly might need one if it's particularly cold.
They may not be necessary for large breeds with a lot of hair but let’s face it, what dog wouldn’t look more adorable in a little sweater or winter coat!?!
My chihuahuas shake when outside in cold weather without their coats on.
Your dog should have enough coat to not need a sweater. Labs are used to colder weather (we had a Lab in MN and she never had a coat on in the winter with the snow). Borders are longer hair dogs and are ok in colder weather.
We live in Texas too - we have a shorthair Dachshund/Terrier mix and she hates clothes and is fine going outside in colder weather to pee/poop. The only dogs that need sweaters are the very short hair dogs like a Chihauhau or Greyhound that doesn't have a thicker coat and will shiver without a sweater or jacket.
no a Labrador is special breed for retrieving birds or any game you hunt i have a black labrador myself and she is just fine in the cold she even gets in the water when its cold out so because its a Labrador Border Collie mix your dog is a mix of 2 breeds that are special breed to be outside in the cold so the labrador part of your dog will want to get wet in the water all year around no matter what its just what labradors love to do so your dog is perfectly fine outside in the cold matter of fact when my black labrador was a puppy shy actually tried to eat the snow so your dog is perfectly fine no worries unless the vet says so
Some dogs, such as toy or short hair breeds, can benefit from a sweater if they are going to be outside for an extended period of time. Most don't need one just to go for a walk unless it's really cold outside.
Your dog consists of two breeds that can handle cold weather very well. Under normal circumstances, she will never need a sweater or jacket.
A dog like yours will never need a coat in Texas. Maybe, if it's 20 below and the dog is going to be staying still for a long time, a coat would be nice, especially if the dog is wet. If the dog is moving around, even 20 below is fine without a coat. You have a mix of two breeds that were meant to be outdoors for long periods in all weathers. Labradors were bred to retrieve birds from water, and hunting season for that is late fall when it can be close to freezing even in daytime.
A dog with a very thin coat (great dane, pit bull, doberman, pointer, weimaraner, etc.) could really use a sweater or similar insulation when outdoors in really cold weather. If you see him or her shivering, a sweater of some sort is definitely needed. A dog with a thicker coat like a labrador, border collie, regular collie, etc. will grow a winter coat that keeps them warm enough that they don't need a sweater, provided they aren't trapped outside in extremely cold weather. Cold climate dogs like huskies, malamutes, St. Bernards, etc. evolved for cold weather and never need a sweater.
Being in Texas you would most definitely not need a sweater for a lab/border collie mix. She'll do just fine. And don't forget to give her a big hug and a kiss on her whiskers!

In general, not all of the time.

Hope this helps.

I live in Dallas :)
No. They never did. Only morons put clothes on animals.
LOL that you think it's getting "chilly" in Texas. The temperatures have ranged from 60 to 80 degrees.

Most dogs do not. I dont see texas getting cold enough for a dog to require a sweater.
Small breeds, hairless dogs and dogs with thin coats may require a sweater
Not unless they have REALLY short fur, are sick/elderly. Your dog should be INDOORS not left outdoors so there should be no need for clothing.
But if it's EXTREMELY cold and you take it for a walk you can buy a thermal dog coat.
