Could anyone tell me, why in USA they translate the name of Cristobal Colón? ?
In USA is called Christopher Columbus. Christopher ???? : ).
Columbus.....????. Christoper in Spain or in Italy??????????
Update:About the origin of Colón, nobody knows anything. At this moment the scientist are studying the family descendants (known spanish family with quite militaries) and the rests of the tomb of the Cathedral of Seville between other things. The origin of Italy is one theory like others, my friend.

People have correctly noted that his name is translated into many European Languages- in France i's Cristophe Colombe, for example. In English, we actually use his Latin name- Columbus. That's because when he became famous, it was still quite fashionable to use the Latin name for famous people, especially in English (which was not a vernacular of Latin and so did not have its "own way" of saying it.)
For example, you may know of Kung-fou-zhou as Confucius, or Rene Descartes as Cartesius.
For the same reason the Spanish translated it from the Italian Cristoforo Colombo.

Scholars currently believe that he was born in Genoa, now part of Italy. His father's name was also Colombo, not Colón. There are some who dispute this, but there is not enough evidence to completely decide either way.
Actually the original name in Italian is Cristoforo Colombo, so we may wonder why they translates it in Spanish as Cristobal Colon...
Edit: well, even the fact those are actually the remains of Colombo/Colon is *not* really sure. I know the DNA test they made were inconclusive due to the poor condition of the remains themselves.
For the same reason the US changes the names of countries? Espana is called Spain and Italia is called Italy...
it's trnalsated in most languges. since most languages have theri own names.

It's the traditional translation I guess... maybe Americans borrowed it from the English or something
