the whole point of the story is that the prince was trying to keep all his friends away from 'the red death' aka 'the bubonic plague' aka 'the black plague' Obviously you cannot hide from mortal diseases. Therefore Poe brings the disease into the house by symbolizing it as the red death.
This story potentially references how poe lost both his mother and lover to Tuberculosis. No matter how far or long he traveled, the disease still followed him, killing all he's ever loved.
