A 875 two-stage rocket is traveling at a speed of 5.40×103 with respect to Earth when a pre-designed explosion separates the rocket into two sections of equal mass that then move at a speed of 2.90×103 relative to each other along the original line of motion.
How much energy was supplied by the explosion? [Hint: What is the change in KE as a result of the explosion?]
I have tried many times to figure this out and I always get it wrong. Help anyone?
Update:I appologize, it is an 875 kg rocket with a speed of 5400 m/s and the other speed is 2900 m/s

It might help if you gave the units for all those numbers. 875 pounds? tons? A speed of 5.40 x 103 inches per year? And if that is supposed to be 10^3, it would be clear to just write 5,400.
